報告題目: Controlling light with nano-optomechanical metamaterials
報告時間:10月16號下午2點 地點:理學樓212室
Abstract: Metamaterials are artificial media with all sorts of unusual functionalities achieved by structuring on a length scale smaller than that of the external stimulus. In optics, the development of metamaterials has led to demonstrations of fascinating optical properties such as negative refraction, invisibility, perfect lenses and many more. Nevertheless, few of these demonstrations have led to practical applications, largely due to the unique properties of metamaterials are narrowband. Here we develop nano-optomechanically reconfigurable metamaterials that offer a flexible platform for static and dynamic control of optical properties. Exploiting this, we use electrostatic, Lorentz and near-field optical forces to achieve high-contrast, high-speed active tuning, modulation and switching of metamaterial properties.
Biography: Dr Jun-Yu Ou, known as Bruce Ou, is currently a Senior Research Fellow in the Optoelectronic Research Centre (ORC), University of Southampton. He started his career as an instrument specialist of scanning electron microscope (SEM) and focused ion beam (FIB) at FEI Company - a world-leading manufacturer of FIBs and electron microscopes. In 2010 he joined the ORC to undertake his doctoral studies at the crossroads of photonics and nanotechnology. He completed his PhD on "Reconfigurable Photonic Metamaterials" in September 2014. For this work, he was awarded the prestigious Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Doctoral Prize fellowship to continue his research on his own research grant for an additional year. For his PhD thesis, he was awarded the Institute of Physics (London) Doctoral Research Prize in 2015. At the end of the EPSRC Doctoral Prize fellowship, he was appointed the project leader of nano-opts-mechanical metamaterials in the flagship EPSRC programme “Nanostructure Photonic Metamaterials” and then "The Physics and Technology of Photonic Metadevices and Metasystems" at the ORC.
Dr Ou published more than 30 high-impact journal publications including Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, and Nano Letters as the first author (h-index:16, citation:1195) and 98 conference contributions. He also possesses expert knowledge in nanotechnology with many years of experience in a wide range of nanofabrication techniques including e-beam lithography, FIB milling, photo-lithography, as well as a use of other advanced cleanroom equipment. He previously delivered lectures and provided consultancy on nano fabrication for research institutions in Taiwan, Singapore and the UK.
Dr Ou’s research interests lie in the area of plasmonic/dielectric nano mechanical reconfigurable metamaterials, nano-optomechanics, phonon-photon interaction, and motion detection for nano-objects.
